Google's AI Overviews are transforming the search landscape, offering users concise, AI-generated summaries directly within search results. This shift is reshaping user behavior, impacting SEO strategies, and prompting businesses to adapt to a new era of search.
Google AI Overviews provide synthesized answers to user queries, drawing information from various web sources. Unlike traditional featured snippets that extract content from a single source, AI Overviews amalgamate data to present a comprehensive response, often accompanied by links for further reading. This feature aims to deliver quick, informative answers, enhancing the user experience by reducing the need to click through multiple links
The introduction of AI Overviews has led to an increase in zero-click searches, where users find the information they need directly on the search results page without visiting any external websites. According to a Semrush study analyzing over 10 million keywords, the presence of AI Overviews in search results grew from 6.49% in January 2025 to 13.14% by March 2025. Interestingly, while AI Overviews are associated with higher zero-click rates, the study found that the zero-click rate slightly decreased from 38.1% to 36.2% when comparing keywords before and after the introduction of AI Overviews, suggesting a nuanced impact on user behavior.
Educational technology company Chegg experienced a significant decline in user engagement, attributing part of this downturn to the rise of AI tools like Google's AI Overviews. In response to decreasing demand, Chegg announced plans to lay off approximately 22% of its workforce. The company reported a 31% drop in subscribers and a 30% decline in revenue in the first quarter of 2025. Chegg also filed a lawsuit against Google, accusing it of using AI-generated summaries that reduce traffic to original content, further impacting its user base and profitability.

AEO focuses on optimizing content to be featured in AI-generated responses, emphasizing the creation of comprehensive, authoritative content that addresses clusters of related questions. This strategy differs from traditional SEO by targeting the way AI systems retrieve and present information, aiming to increase visibility within AI-generated answers.
To adapt to the evolving search environment, businesses should consider the following strategies:
