At its core, social media consists of multiple platforms which allow users to create and share content, interact with others users, and build communities around shared interests.

With so many to choose from, a lot of people have asked me which social media platforms to use, and I always say “all of them.”
*cough *cough
TikTok...

Ok, I’m only joking… kind of.

The truth is, not every platform is right for every business. And trying to be active everywhere can burn you out faster than a meme goes viral.

So instead of chasing trends blindly, let’s break it down. This post will help you figure out which social media platform (or two) actually makes sense for your business.

First, What’s Your Goal?

Before picking a social media platform for your business, ask yourself:

  • Are you trying to build brand awareness?

  • Drive traffic to your website?

  • Show off your products?

  • Educate your audience?

  • Build a community?

  • Just trying to go viral for the clout?

Your goals will help guide your platform choice. Now let’s look at the major players:

Instagram – Visuals & Vibes

Good for: Products, lifestyle, creators, fashion, beauty, food
Why use it: It’s built for aesthetics. If your product or brand looks good, this is your playground. Reels = discoverability. Stories = engagement. Grid = portfolio.

You’ll love it if you have:

  • Great photos or short videos with good hooks

  • A brand with a personality or visual style

  • Something that benefits from being “seen”

TikTok – The Wild West of Reach

Good for: Almost everything, if you’re creative
Why use it: The algorithm doesn’t care how many followers you have. It cares if your videos retain people's attention. That’s a massive opportunity.

You’ll love it if you can:

  • Be funny, weird, educational, or relatable

  • Hop on trends (or make your own)

  • Show up consistently

Even if you think your business is “too boring” for TikTok… someone’s probably going viral right now selling printer ink with a silly voice over. Give it a shot.

Facebook – Still Relevant (Surprisingly)

Good for: Local businesses, service providers, older demographics
Why use it: Groups, events, and ads still work. Plus, a lot of people still check Facebook for updates, reviews, and contact info.

You’ll love it if you:

  • Serve a local or family-oriented audience

  • Run events or rely on word-of-mouth

  • Want to build a long-term community

LinkedIn – B2B’s Best Friend

Good for: Professional services, consulting, SaaS, agencies
Why use it: It’s where business folks hang out. Share insights, not selfies. Network, don’t pitch. Build trust by being actually helpful.

You’ll love it if you:

  • Sell to other businesses

  • Want to position yourself as a thought leader

  • Aren’t afraid of a little keyboard clout

X (Formerly Twitter) – Quick Thoughts, Big Impact

Good for: Tech, media, public figures, real-time updates
Why use it: It’s fast-paced and conversation-driven. Great for showing wit, staying on top of trends, or dunking on your competitors (respectfully).

You’ll love it if you:

  • Like to share quick thoughts, hot takes, or industry insights

  • Want to be part of daily conversations

  • Can post consistently without overthinking it

YouTube – Long-Form = Long Game

Good for: Tutorials, storytelling, deep dives, recurring content
Why use it: YouTube is the second-largest search engine in the world. Your content here lasts forever (okay, maybe not forever, but definitely longer than a TikTok).

You’ll love it if you:

  • Can produce high-quality video content

  • Want to educate, entertain, or explain

  • Have something people might search for

So... Which One Should You Use?

Let’s simplify things:
